One of the inescapable realities in life is sickness. Everyone gets sick and no one ever enjoys it. But all is not lost. A thoughtful get well gift basket can help ease the pain of an illness and provide at least a psychological shot in the arm for the afflicted.

What is inside get well gift baskets? The answer really depends on the gravity affliction. Here are some of the common contents:

  • What is universal are flowers and fruits. There is no arguing the effectiveness of these twin salves. Flowers brighten up an otherwise clinical environment and make the patient feel more at home. Fruits on the other hand contain vitamins and minerals that naturally strengthen the patient’s defenses to fight what ails them. These should always be inside get well gift baskets

  • Light reading materials are also recommended inside get well gift baskets. Confinement is boring, and depressing. A good book in the light comedy genre helps ease the boredom. No heavy stuff please. Crime and suspense are definitely out of the list. So is heavy romance.

  • Music has also been proven to be effective as a cure, especially classical music. Whether it is because it is really therapeutic or just lulls the patient to sleep, it works, so this is also recommended fare (in tape or CD) in get well gift baskets. Make sure to also bring the device that will play the music

  • Get well gift baskets may also contain other therapeutic items that could be personal to the patient. Letters and cards from loved ones from far away are recommended, as well as their pictures. Home made movies of loved ones wishing the patient well may also be included in get well gift baskets. Huggable toys (be sure they are hypoallergenic) are just the thing to help cure the loneliness when a human hug is not allowed

  • If the patient loves to draw, include a sketchpad and pencils in the get well gift baskets. Avoid paint because these may cause a mess. If the doctor will allow it, include aromatherapy oils and an aromatherapy oil heater to conjure a more soothing and sweet-smelling atmosphere to the room. Other items may be included in the get well gift baskets to “remove” the “hospital look” and, with it, the depression, boredom and/or loneliness that comes with confinement

  • Get well gift baskets should contain the items that will make a patient get well as soon as possible. These are highly personalized gifts and the best way to find out the best items that should be included in them is to consult with the patient’s relatives and loved ones with whom he or she spends most of his or her time. They are your best source information to make these get well gift baskets appropriate for the patient.
In the absence of these sources, there are a few tips that you might want to consider in making get well gift baskets. First, include items that will not cause stress to the patient. Next, include foods rich in nutritional value, but make sure that these are allowed by the doctor. Nothing hurts a patient more than knowing he can not eat “normal food”. Finally, include items that are sure to evoke positive emotions. A happy patient is known to get better quicker.
